Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law

The Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law, the first of its kind in the IIT system was set up in 2006. The basis of the School is to cater to the need for lawyers with technical expertise. We see ourselves as a part of the global endeavor to integrate technology and law to build technical lawyers with expertise to deal with the legal issues in the interface of technology and law. As such we are the only Law School with a technology focus.
The School offers three programs; LL.B with specialization in IP Rights, LL.M in different specialisations and Doctoral Program in Law. The global perspective is captured well in the academic program in which we offer diverse set of courses. A comparative study of law from different jurisdictions is also an important feature of many of our courses.

Our faculty is a vibrant group drawn from different disciplines of law. They also teach across different IIT departments, conduct various international, governmental as well as sponsored industrial research projects. Our faculty has several international publications. They have won several awards and are members of national as well as international bodies. The School invites several guest faculty, adjunct faculty, industry experts to build practical exposure to students in different areas of law.

Courses

LL.B

Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law (RGSOIPL) is the first of its kind law school to impart legal education with IP specialization within the IIT System bringing synergy among science, technology, management and law. The School offers a Six-Semester, Three-Year Full-Time residential programme leading to the Degree of Bachelor of Laws (Hons) in Intellectual Property Law approved by the Bar Council of India.

Programme

Curriculum of the Programme has been prepared based on the requirements of the Bar Council of India. In addition, several specialised courses in law and Intellectual Property Rights are offered.

Eligibility:- First Class Bachelors Degree in Engineering / Technology / Medicine or equivalent.

OR

First Class Masters Degree in Science or Pharmacy or equivalent.
OR

First Class MBA Degree with any of the above

The CGPA will not be converted into percentage marks if the degree awarding institute provides marks in CGPA system. Their admission will be based on the CGPA awarded in the transcript. If the CGPA is on adifferent scale other than 10.0, the eligibility of the candidate will be calculated corresponding to the equivalence stated above.

LL.M

The Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law is engaged in, and striving for, a world-class excellence in legal education in India. RGSOIPL equips the students to unravel intricacies of different laws and legal issues and to appreciate or critique them in the given setting with apt logical reasoning. The weekly discussions, seminars and debates in the classroom provide them a unique forum to sharpen their skills and logic. RGSOIPL has been ranked 4th in India by NIRF, MHRD.

Eligibility:-First class (or equivalent ) in Bachelor of Laws LL.B./B.L. (5 years) program from any recognised University, or

First Class (or equivalent) in Bachelor of Laws LL.B./B.L.(3 years) program from any recognised University along with Bachelor’s Degree (not less than 3 years) in Humanities/ Science/ Commerce or equivalent.

Students having LL.B (Hons.) in Intellectual Porperty Law from the IIT Kharagpur with CGPA of 8.5 or above are eligible for admission without appearing in the All India Common Entrance Examination (CET).

Library

The Central Library of IIT Kharagpur is one of the largest and finest technical libraries in Asia. It has been catering to the needs of our students of undergraduates, postgraduates, research scholar, faculty members and staff members of the various departments, centers, schools and research facilities.

The Library is well equipped with modem facilities and resources (print and electronic) in the forms of CDROMs, DVD-ROM, online databases, micro-documents,video cassettes, books, journals, patents, standards, theses, reports, etc. It has also developed a full-fledged Digital Library equipped with necessary modem equipment in order to provide various digital mode Library services. Digital Library section of the Central Library has developed an institutional digital repository using open source software DSpace, which preserve the institute’s intellectual output for campus wide access and digital preservation for the posterity. Library Collection (print and e-resources): The Library is having a collection of more than 3.5 Lakh documents, subscribing about 100+ print journals, and providing access to over 26,000+ online full- text journals and several abstracting databases. Besides, there are 135,000+ e-books. The collection consists of Books, Back-volumes of Periodicals, Theses, Conference Proceedings, Standards, Reports, Microforms, and CD-ROM/DVD-ROM Databases and Audiovisual materials. The Library has two buildings, the Main Building and the Annex Building. Books, Theses and Standards are kept in the Main Building. Current Periodicals, Bound Journals, CD-ROM/DVD-ROM Databases and lecture of various video courses are kept in the Annexe Building
