W&M Law School is one of five graduate and professional programs at William & Mary, a premier public research university widely recognized for its outstanding academic reputation, beautiful campus, and vibrant community.
Our students come here to pursue excellence and to learn from our passionate teachers and scholars, many of whom are leaders in their field. Our graduates go on to start their careers throughout the country with a wide range of employers. W&M Law School’s many clinics provide critical legal services to the community in areas such as veterans benefits, immigration, domestic violence, appellate advocacy, and special education.
Academics
Juris Doctor (J.D.) – full-time study with combination degrees in Law & Master of Business Administration and Law & Master of Arts in American Studies.
The J.D. degree is the basic law degree. With a J.D. (and after passing a state Bar exam), you can be a lawyer, whether that involves practicing law, or working in business, or politics, or public service, or whatever you want.
The Law School’s required courses, like Torts, Contracts, Property, and others, give you a solid foundation in law and the legal system. After that, the elective curriculum will let you build on that foundation by selecting courses from a wide range of legal specializations.
Students may choose to take courses in one of several academic concentrations. Concentrations indicate focused coursework and experiential learning or independent research in a particular area of study beyond the required curriculum. Students who successfully complete the concentration will receive a notation on their Law School transcripts.
Master of Laws (LL.M.) Program
Our innovative LL.M. program is designed for foreign-educated students and attorneys who want to compete in an increasingly globalized legal world. We have been welcoming students from all over the world since 1989.
